What is Bio, medical, dental & pharmaceutical infrared imaging?

Infrared cameras are used in a variety of bio(medical), dental and pharmaceutical applications. Here we will give an overview of some applications and list the necessary key features of infrared cameras that are used for these applications.



Bio(medical) infrared imaging

The best-known application is probably fever detection in (air)ports. To reduce the spread of infectious diseases or viruses, thermal LWIR cameras measure the skin (face) temperature of every passenger. To contain the spread of the disease, people with an elevated skin temperature need to go through further medical examination.
The cameras that are used for fever detection are thermal LWIR cameras, with temperature calibrations in order to determine the skin (face) temperature of a human person as accurate as possible. Often a black body reference source is used to improve accuracy of the measurement. Our Gobi thermal camera offers the thermal stability and temperature measurement accuracy that is needed for this application.

Another interesting biomedical application is SWIR fluorescence imaging for deep tissue in-vivo imaging. This technique is used in cancer research and offers a resolution of a few milimeters.
After optical excitation, the fluorescence of organic dyes, fluorescent proteins or quantum dots are detectable in the low-loss window for biological tissue (1000 – 1700 nm).

Dental infrared imaging

SWIR cameras in an OCT (optical coherence tomography) setup are used in dental applications. For example, they can be used to identify caries in an early stage by seeing inside teeth and gums (up to a few mm). For dental infrared imaging we offer our Bobcat-640 series, with both GigE and CameraLink interfaces. 

Pharmaceutical infrared imaging

SWIR cameras are commonly used in hyperspectral imaging systems for pharmaceutical applications. For example, similar tablets of generic drug compounds such as aspirin, acetaminophen, vitamin C and vitamin D can be inspected. Based on their spectral signatures in the SWIR band, the presence (or absence), or spectral homogeneity of multiple compounds is detectable. This technique finds application in quality control, or detection of counterfeit medicines.
